Penelope on an odyssee

Book Premiere, Reading and Talk

At 5 pm, the doors will open to the ‘Café Antike’ at Pariser Platz. Ancient Greek recitations and refreshing drinks invite you to unseal the world of myths from its preserving jar. Take a seat at one of four moderated themed tables, join in the discussion and reflect on the relevance of antiquity in our lives today. From 7 pm, Ulrike Draesner will read from her new book penelopes sch()iff, followed by discussion with Aris Fioretos, Jonas Grethlein and Karen Leeder. The book tells the story of a bold female journey across the Aegean – a journey that resonates far beyond the boundaries of the ancient epic. We hear not only what the queen has to say, but also her daughters and slaves. As soon as the ship sets sail, the familiar social order begins to unravel. How can people live together without oppression? And how can fruitful coexistence come about despite old wounds?
